Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford is the heart and soul of Stanford Children’s Health. Nationally ranked and internationally recognized, our 311-bed hospital is devoted entirely to pediatrics and obstetrics. Our six centers of excellence provide comprehensive services and deep expertise in key obstetric and pediatric areas: brain & behavior, cancer, heart, pregnancy & newborn, pulmonary and transplant. We also provide an additional, wide range of services for babies, kids and pregnant moms.
The Pediatric Orthoptist, functions as a member of the clinic patient care team and is under the direction of the Practice Manager and Licensed Physician. Perform technical skills, procedures and treatments to support the delivery of patient care. Measure and test visual acuity, focusing ability, eye movement, binocular function and color vision. Detect disorders of the eyes which prevent normal vision, such as strabismus (turned eye) and amblyopia (lazy eye). Devise treatment plans for disorders, using eye exercises, techniques to control eye movement and other strategies. Conduct specialized tests to determine the effects of general pathology and eye diseases (such as glaucoma) on the eyes, and in some circumstances, refract and prescribe spectacles, under the supervision of the ophthalmologist or optomitrist. Provide strategies to assist people with neurological disorders (such as stroke or head injury) or low vision to maximize their remaining vision. Provide reports on the existence of eye defects to medical practitioners, therapists and transport authorities. Provide educational information to patients and members of the community about eye conditions and their effects. Provide eye tests to groups within the community (e.g. pre-school children).
Adjusts practice/selects equipment to accommodate age-specific needs.
Assists in the collection and sending of specimens to appropriate labs for testing per protocol.
Assists physicians, RN and allied health professionals with patient procedures and examinations.
Complies with State regulations and LPCH policies regarding controlled medications.
Coordinates the scheduling component of the treatment plan to assure it is executed in a timely manner.
Delivers patient education according to established plan or physician direction.
Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development across the life span for population(s) cared for.
Prepares and administers medications (except intravenous) as ordered.
Processes requests for prescriptions refills according to established practice.
Promptly and accurately reports symptoms, reactions, effects of medications, changes and patient's concerns to RN and/or physician.
Responds with patient and non-patient emergencies according to LPCH policies and procedures.
Verifies patient's understanding of the physician's orders and treatment plans.
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.
Education: Bachelor's Degree and successful completion of a 24 month fellowship in an accredited program for orthoptics
Experience: Two (2) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience

Ability to determine appropriate treatments to correct eye muscle issues or problems.
Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, work independently and meet deadlines.
Ability to speak and write effectively at a level appropriate for the job.
Knowledge of orthoptic diagnostic instruments and procedures.
Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.
