The Organ Procurement Specialist will be responsible for the pediatric organ recovery program's transplant phases of care from pre-transplant phase (referral, evaluation, and waitlist) to the transplant event phase and through the post-transplant phase (follow-up for life of the transplanted organ). These phases span the outpatient and the inpatient care continuum. The specialist is responsible for services related to organ acquisition and works closely with administration and other department Manager(s) for these core functional areas of the program. In conjunction with the Administrative Director, oversees the program to ensure the delivery of safe, quality patient care  in alignment with applicable state and federal regulatory requirements (such as CMS, OPTN/UNOS and TJC). Additionally, develops clinical protocols, policy and procedures including organ retrieval, community education and public relations, transplant donor/recipient coordination and liaison function with organ procurement agencies.

  • Oversees the organ procurement flow through the transplant process, patient satisfaction and concerns, electronic and medical documentation process.
     
  • Ensures that patients receive safe, quality care in an efficient and customer-centric manner through alignment with established policies, procedures, protocols, workflows, and regulatory requirements.
     
  • Coordinates organ retrieval by serving as the primary contact when donor organs become available, and maintaining close communication with the transplant team.
     
  • Ensures adequate and accurate electronic medical record documentation through adherence to the established workflows on a daily basis.
     
  • Collaborates with leadership in other departments through the organizational matrix to support transplant patient care delivery.
     
  • Collaborates with Manager of Quality, Safety and Compliance on Transplant QAPI program efforts such as establishing objective measures to evaluate program performance and maintenance of patient outcomes to meet or exceed expectations.
     
  • Works closely with members of the Stanford Children's leadership team to support clinical, quality, regulatory compliance, information systems, fiscal, and research goals and initiatives of the program(s) and the institute.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience:  Four (4) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience

License/Certification: None

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or licensure/certification.

  • Knowledge of thoracic organs, organ recovery, preservation, and packaging standards and practices.
     
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of office equipment, including but not limited to: word processor or personal computer, Microsoft Office Suite 2000 (or more recent), fax machine, calculator, photocopier, and portable telephone/PDA.
     
  • Ability to use ACT Machine, Heart Lung Machine, Ramphal Cardiac Simulation.
     
  • Ability to coordinate multiple complex transplant related processes.
     
  • Ability to think quickly and critically in organ transplant related areas and adapt to extenuating circumstances when organs become available.
     
  • Knowledge of the critical and time sensitive issues that arise with organ harvesting and retrieval.
     
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to organs.
     
  • Knowledge of the protocols pertaining to organ retrieval.
     
  • Knowledge of billing standards and requirements for organ retrieval.
     
  • Knowledge of organ transplant regulations and acceptance policies.
