The Practice and Education Manager provides leadership oversight, management and direction for professional education and nursing practice at Stanford Children's Health. Establishes and maintains a system for developing, reviewing, approving and disseminating standards of practice and making recommendations on policy issues related to clinical practice and clinical education. The manager is accountable for competent clinical practice and evidence-based practice in the delivery of patient care. Responsibilities include coordination of systems level and clinic/unit-based clinical education and practice; supervision of a professional team that includes Clinical Nurse Specialists/Clinical Practice Quality Specialist and Nurse Educators/Nursing Professional Development Specialists; administrative and budget management; troubleshooting of problem areas; organizational change management; ensuring compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards; quality assurance/quality improvement; safety and risk management requirements as well as actualization of hospital and clinic/unit policies, goals and objectives. Further, ensuring teams support clinic/unit operations, enhancing professional practice, customizing clinical education, and accepting organizational accountability for services provided to recipients are critical outcomes expected of this role.

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital’s policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.

 

  • Provides oversight of the Clinical Nurse Specialists and Clinical Practice Quality Specialists professional guidelines for this nursing level in partnership with the Director of Practice, Education, and Implementation and serves as the direct supervisor for this group of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses.
  • Provides oversight of the Nurse Educators/Nursing Professional Development Specialists professional guidelines for this nursing level in partnership with the Director of Practice, Education, and Implementation and serves as the direct supervisor for this group.
  • Oversees the development and evaluation of nursing quality, safety and regulatory readiness to ensure alignment with organizational needs, scope of practice, goals and initiatives.
  • Serves as a liaison with Patient Care Service and Center for Pediatric and Maternal Value (CPMV) to optimize clinical practice and staff educational initiatives.
  • Plans, organizes, and directs short- and long-term activities in accordance with Stanford Children's Health goals and accrediting organization standards.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates process improvement projects/process in order to continually monitor and improve patient safety outcomes, such as hospital acquired conditions and safety occurrences.
  • Ensures competent clinical practice and evidence-based practice in the delivery of patient care as well as by monitoring and evaluating patient care processes and outcomes for the clinics and patient care unit(s).
  • Promotes nursing innovation and assures integration of best practice in educational programs, evidence-based practice (EBP) initiatives and nursing research.
  • Supports the quality framework, which includes both clinical and service quality indicators. Creates an environment of patient care that is safe, effective, patient centered, timely, efficient and equitable.
  • Promotes integration of research findings and evidence-based practice into healthcare policy and clinical practice.
  • Measures outcome data after implementation with fidelity to both the implementation design and the intervention.
  • Promotes of Caring Science foundations and guiding principles for health and wellness of nurse leaders, thereby creating a culture where caring consciousness is rigorously encouraged, supported and developed.
  • Plans and forecasts the department budget by calculating required FTEs, planning annual budgets, interpreting payroll and other key fiscal reports, projecting workload as well as monitoring and enhancing productivity. Performs variance analysis by interpreting financial performance and identifying key drivers. Identifies clinic/unit capital budget needs in collaboration with physician and nursing colleagues. Plans and implements staff scheduling, position controls and attendance control procedures.
  • Directs the personnel management of the employees assigned to manager consistent with state, federal labor laws, nursing service, hospital philosophy, goals and policy. Ensures that new staff are interviewed, hired, trained, oriented, precepted and evaluated. Prepares and conducts employee performance appraisals. Approves transfers, promotions and other decisions affecting employee pay and status. Participates in initiating and documenting disciplinary actions and responding to grievances.
  • Communicates in a clear and effective manner to enhance team effectiveness, manage conflicts, engage employees and interdisciplinary colleagues in clinic/unit activities and performance changes.
  • Collaborates with others within the unit and with clinic and hospital departments and disciplines to enhance problem solving, decision making and performance improvement.
  • Assures compliance with all accreditation standards, standards of practice, policies, and procedures.
  • Serves as an expert in performance and quality improvement concepts and deploys accurate methodologies for implementation and sustainability.
  • Collaborates with the CPEI Managers to ensure coordination in the involvement of practice and education programs.
  • Functions as a resource to interdisciplinary team members and interdepartmentally, consults on nursing professional practice and education.

 

 Minimum Qualifications

 

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

 

Education: Master's Degree, Doctoral degree preferred, in a nursing-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university    

Experience: Broad and extensive and progressively responsible directly related work experience in administrative and/or managerial positions

License/Certification: CA Registered Nurse - Valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing (RN-CA); certification in area specialty area preferred.

  • Knowledge of leadership and management skills essential to the practice of nursing, clinical educational principles and current trends in health care delivery and clinic/hospital system organization and administration.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, administration, fiscal and personnel management   Knowledge of the current theories, principles, practices and standards of as well as emerging technologies,  techniques, issues, and approaches in the nursing profession, particularly those applicable to the area of assignment/expertise.
  • Knowledge of the types of nursing practice and care delivery systems, understanding of the complexity of the  nursing practice environment, modality development for clinical education, roles and responsibilities of the health care team members to achieve quality outcomes.
