Job Summary

The Hospital School Teacher will adapt and develop educational materials to meet the unique needs of hospitalized patients and their siblings that may be admitted at LPCH, El Camino or staying at the Ronald McDonald House.  The Teacher will work with already established educational materials from patients' enrolled schools and, if present, may follow the patients' established Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) to assist students in reaching their full learning potential.  Teachers assess patients' and their siblings educational needs, provide educational support, serve as educational liaison between their home school, and provide academic instruction for schoolwork both in a group setting and at the bedside. Teachers provide some academic instruction across all disciplines and grade levels, regardless of population assigned. Teachers contribute to a positive hospital experience that supports academic achievement as well as the needs of the whole child.  All functions will be performed at the Ronald McDonald House or El Camino Hospital.

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Service Standards of the Hospital(s).

  • Act as the liaison between the district hospital school teachers and director, including but not limited to Ronald McDonald House teacher, El Camino Teacher, and LPCH school teachers, on operational initiatives such as Prom, special events, etc.  
  • Plans, implements and documents an individualized plan to continue the education of hospitalized children and their siblings.  
  • Assesses how each student learns best and adapts teaching methods to fit the unique learning needs.  
  • Develops and plans creative teaching and learning activities; providing appropriate teaching materials and supplies.
  • Administers and interprets diagnostic, educational and cognitive aptitude tests, if applicable.
  • Evaluates and summarizes outcomes of school-based teaching methods.
  • Works closely with hospital staff, LPCH Hospital School Teachers, parents and school professionals to plan educational services provided to students post-discharge. Consults with general education teachers on an as-needed basis.
  • Participates in planning and development of Individual Education Plans (IEP), if applicable.
  • Maintains knowledge of current educational materials and trends; completing annual continuing education necessary for obtained certification(s).
  • Orients volunteers regarding policies and procedures; guides volunteers to assist them in providing quality interaction with patients.

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree   

Experience:  One (1) year of classroom teaching experience or hospital school teaching.  License/Certification: Valid California Teaching Credential

  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English effectively at a level appropriate for the safe and effective performance of the job
