Responsible for the overall operational management of perfusion services including patient flow, staffing, and quality of work on a 24-hours per day, seven days per week basis. Primary duties include designing, monitoring, and managing clinical areas and therapies to provide and promote high quality, efficient, cost-effective services in compliance with hospital, accrediting, and regulatory requirements. Maintains department's effectiveness in the operation of heart-lung machines throughout the organization, assuring high quality following established departmental and Quality Assurance (QA) protocols using independent judgment and initiatives. Also manages assigned staff and utilization of resources within assigned areas to meet financial and productivity standards, quality standards and strategic goals of the department and hospital.

Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring/terminating, scheduling, performance evaluations, quality reviews, staff education, coaching, development, support and promotion of customer relations, and monitoring of activities to ensure performance standards are achieved. Provides input to the development of business plans, leads improvement projects, and serves as a member of hospital committees and workgroups. Must maintain technical competencies as a Perfusionist and functions as an equipment super user. Identifies and resolves technical and operational customer service requirements.

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Service Standards of the Hospital(s).

  • Assumes twenty-four (24) hour responsibility and accountability for the operation of the perfusion services, staff, and facilities. Plans, organizes, and directs short- and long-term departmental activities in accordance with hospital goals and accrediting organization standards.

  • Hires, schedules, trains, and evaluates the performance of and implements corrective action, up to and including termination, for assigned staff as necessary. Addresses individual staff performance problems as needed; directs the design and implementation of corrective action plan where performance is an issue. Assures staff competency to handle technical responsibilities by developing competency standards and measurement tools and assuring that staff is appropriately licensed, certified, trained and reviewed.

  • Manages an effective delivery of quality perfusion services and ensures operations meet customer needs, department standards, policies and procedures, community standards, and regulatory agency requirements. Revises, develops and implements departmental procedures; communicate necessary changes to affected staff and departments.

  • Resolves scheduling/patient care needs (including research) and monitors outpatient schedule back-log, provides recommendation for emergency needs accommodation in a timely manner. Standardizes and consolidates technical processes and efforts when appropriate. Develops and maintains an effective and efficient system of information, records and reports, utilizing manual, and electronic systems.

  • Collaborates with the Executive Director/Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) to develop, implement, and monitor departmental budget including capital budget request and purchases. Develops cost standards and cost accounting data for the department.

  • Participates in data gathering and reporting within benchmark organizations. Compiles statistical and other data reports as needed.

  • Ensures adequate supplies and equipment are available and kept ready following regulatory standards. Notifies appropriate personnel of supply requirements; makes recommendations concerning the purchase, maintenance and/or repair of equipment.

  • Participates in the development of content, training, and orientation of assigned staff, students, residents, and faculty.

  • Functions as super user for heart-lung machine, physiological monitoring instrumentation and related ancillary equipment in cardiac surgical procedures;  providing instruction and assistance to staff. Manages information utilizing appropriate manual or electronic system.

  • May set up and operates heart-lung machine, physiological monitoring instrumentation and related ancillary equipment in cardiac surgical procedures as needed to support department's standard of quality as required. Reviews set up and operation of heart-lung machines for quality, providing input back to staff.

Minimum Qualifications 

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field

Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience

License/Certification: Certified Clinical Perfusionist from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or licensure/certification.

  • Ability to develop, implement and evaluate methods, processes and systems to improve efficiency of department operations.

  • Ability to develop financial budgets and manage expenses

  • Ability to manage workflow and/or unit productivity.

  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in operating and modifying extracorporeal circulation and cardio-pulmonary support systems and ancillary devices (e.g., blood gas analyzers, autotransfusion devices, etc.).

  • Ability to anticipate and respond appropriately to potentially serious situations involving the patient and technical problems that may arise.

  • Knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology, and extracorporeal circulation technology, including adjunctive techniques.

  • Knowledge of cardiac disease, defects, and congenital anomalies.

  • Knowledge of organ preservation, sterile and perfusion supplies, such as extracorporeal oxygenators, tubing circuits and cannulae.

  • Knowledge of pharmacology of blood, fluids and medications administration and interaction with extra-corporeal devices.

  • Knowledge of blood components, plasma composition of the human body in association of support by extracorporeal circuits and devices.

  • Knowledge of the following areas in relation to clinical perfusion:
        - Anatomy and physiology
        - Pathophysiology
        - Pharmacology
        - Applied Sciences (e.g., biochemistry, physics)
        - Hematology
        - Computer technology

  • Ability to plan, organize, develop tactical plans and set priorities.

  • Ability to solve problems and identify solutions.

  • Ability to speak and write effectively at a level appropriate for the job.

  • Ability to supervise, coach, mentor, train, and evaluate work results.

  • Ability to work effectively as a team player.

  • Knowledge of local, state and federal regulatory requirements related to areas of functional responsibility.

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, administration, fiscal and personnel management.
