The Health Library Specialist works with with other library staff to ensure that the library collection meets patron needs, participates in planning, provides on-line information services, and provides oversight, training, and support to the volunteer staff. Responsible for handling phone and reception; guiding families and staff through the collection and locating information pertinent to their inquiries regarding specific illnesses, procedures, and medications; performing on-line computer searches, utilizing various authoritative sources, to help families and staff locate additional resources appropriate to their inquiries; training and coordinating volunteers and performing other organizational duties, as needed.

Essential Functions

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Service Standards of the Hospital(s).

*Assists patients, families and staff in utilizing the services.

*Assists with selection, development and processing of the various resource collections.

*Collects resources from patient rooms, drop boxes and other areas of the hospital.

*Completes required statistics daily.

*Greets, orients and assists visitors.

*Interviews, places, trains and schedules volunteers.

*Maintains a working knowledge of the various collections.

*Maintains communication with all volunteers by meeting with them on a regular basis, providing updated information about the collections and the hospital.

*Provides subject specific bibliographies on request of families and staff members.

*Records patron information, checks resources in and out, re-shelves and re-files returned resources.

*Tracks overdue resources.

*Works with other staff to ensure that library collection meets patron needs.

Minimum  Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and
abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

*Education: Associate's degree in a work-related field/discipline from an accredited college or university

*Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience

*Ability to adjust communications to fit the needs and level of understanding of the receiver

*Ability to interpret and apply library policies, procedures and explain technical material such as local and national library standards and rules

*Ability to speak and write effectively at a level appropriate for the job

*Ability to work effectively both as a team player and leader

*Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area

*Knowledge of Medical Terminology
