JOB SUMMARY

The Sterile Processing (SP) Technician I provides basic knowledge and competence in a variety of sterile processing techniques and procedures. Under direct supervision, responsible for supporting the operations of the Hospital's Sterile Processing Department. Responsible for the decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and storage of level one complexity patient care instruments, equipment, and supplies. Under direct supervision, the technician performs non-complex tasks related to decontamination, the assembly of instruments, and sterilization and may also work in the sterile cores of the operating rooms.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Employees must abide by all Joint Commission Requirements including but not limited to sensitivity to cultural diversity, patient care, patient rights and ethical treatment, safety and security of physical environments, emergency management, teamwork, respect for others, participation in ongoing education and training, communication and adherence to safety and quality programs, sustaining compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, and licensure and health screenings.

 

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.

 

*Under direct supervision, responsible for supporting the operations of areas listed below, but not limited to: LPCH Operating Room, LPCH Sterile Processing Department, Anesthesia, Labor and Delivery, Newborn Nursery, ICUs, Respiratory Therapy, and Ambulatory Sites.

 

*Cleans, sterilizes, assembles, and stores instruments and equipment according to established standards and procedures in ANSI/AAMI ST79.

 

*Performs non-complex tasks in decontamination, such as disassembly, inspection, and understands the concept of a one-way workflow.

 

*Assembles level one complexity trays using foundational skills such as inspection, functionality checks, and tray preparation using devices that monitor sterilization processes to ensure sterilization parameters have been met.

 

*Performs fundamental sterilization techniques using steam and low-temperature gas plasma sterilization and appropriately document supporting work.

 

*Maintains sterile storage inventory, interpret operating room schedule, understands basic medical terminology, preference cards and pick cases.

 

*Assures the prudent use of resources and efficiently maintains inventory.
Follows Hospital Safety and Infection Prevention policy and guidelines for self, patients, visitors, and employees.

 

*Maintains professional behavior and appearance.

 

*Maintains professional self-development by participating in educational opportunities available internally and externally.

*Manages information utilizing appropriate manual or electronic systems for shift work activity.  Reports any discrepancies or unusual activity to the Acting Lead Technician, Lead Technician, or Supervisor.

 

*Participates in and complies with departmental and institutional regulatory requirements, policies, and procedures pertaining to quality control, quality assurance, and preventive maintenance.
 

*Performs duties by following the hospital's and Sterile Processing Department's policies and procedures. Works collaboratively with peers to achieve department goals and the organization's vision.

*Performs technical tasks while conforming to standard procedures and methods used to decontaminate, assemble, sterilize, and distribute supplies and instrumentation within the applicable federal, state, and other regulatory agencies, including the Joint Commission.
 

*Promotes a positive work environment through respectful communication, diversity awareness, and teamwork.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Experience: None required; 400 externship hours preferred.
 

License/Certification:

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician by Healthcare Sterile Processing Association within 365 days
  • or
  • CBSPD Technician by Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education or licensure/certification.

 

*Ability to perform fundamental sterilization techniques using steam and low-temperature gas plasma sterilization and appropriately document supporting work.

 

*Ability to maintain sterile storage inventory, interpret operating room schedule, understands basic medical terminology, preference cards and pick cases.

 

*Ability to effectively prioritize work and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

 

*Ability to follow policies and procedures regarding all aspects of an assignment, including basic arithmetic and inventory calculations.

 

*Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
 

*Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English effectively at a level appropriate for the job.

Pay Range
Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.
Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.
Minimum to Midpoint Range (Hourly): $33.94 to $38.06
